The Institute of Latvian History of the University of Latvia has received financial support from the State Education Development Agency (VIAA) for the organization of the international summer school "Latvia at the Crossroads of European Cultures: History and Modernity". The summer school will be held from June 27 to July 6, 2024, in Riga and Liepaja, the organizer of the event is the Institute of Latvian History, and the cooperation partner is the Liepaja University.

In 2024, 20 years will have passed since Latvia became a member of the European Union. Therefore, the summer school will be organized to emphasize the interaction between Latvia and Europe, at the same time emphasizing the unique cultural and historical heritage of Latvia, thus reviving the recognition contained in the preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia about Latvia's belonging to the European cultural space. The school program will also include questions about the interaction of Latvian and Ukrainian history and culture.

During school, there will be lectures, seminars, and discussions on:

  • historical and cultural processes in Europe/Ukraine and their impact on events in Latvia, as well as on the cultural and historical development of Latvian regions;
  • Latvian diaspora activity in Europe and Ukraine;
  • activities of notable Europeans in Latvia;
  • Latvian history in European and Ukrainian historiography;
  • historical and cultural research experience in Latvia, Europe, Ukraine.

The opportunity to apply for participation and receive a Latvian state scholarship is available to foreign master's and doctoral study program students, as well as academic staff. The amount of the scholarship is 1,000 EUR, it is intended to cover the expenses of participating in the summer school (accommodation, meals, teaching materials and cultural events). Travel expenses, including visa fees, are covered by the participant from personal funds!
