From December 4 to 5, an international symposium on the problems of the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods took place in Vilnius. The symposium, which has been organized by the Lithuanian Institute of History for 14 years, was also attended by Daina Bleiere and Mārtiņš Kaprāns, leading researchers of the State Research Programme project “Navigating the Latvian History of the 20th-21st Century: Social Morphogenesis, Legacy and Challenges” (project no. VPP-IZM-Vēsture-2023/1-0003). This year’s symposium focused on the analysis of the biographies, decisions and mutual connections of the leaders of the political and cultural elite of the Soviet republics. D. Bleiere presented a paper “Anatolijs Gorbunovs: Six Years of Political Evolution (1985–1991),” while M. Kaprāns spoke about the cultural figures of the Latvian SSR in his paper “Different Paths to Influence: Jānis Škapars, Gunārs Priede, and the Soviet Latvian Field of Power”.
