From 27 to 28 November, the annual Society for the History of War (SHoW) conference “Cultures of War and Violence” took place at the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences and at the University of Potsdam in Germany. Latvia was represented in a panel “War, Violence and State Building: Military, Political, and Social Transformation in Latvia and the Baltic Region, 1918-1920” as a part of the State Research Programme project “Navigating the Latvian History of the 20th-21st Century: Social Morphogenesis, Legacy and Challenges” (project no. VPP-IZM-Vēsture-2023/1-0003) by project researchers Professor Dr. hist. Ēriks Jēkabsons and Dr. hist. Kārlis Dambītis, as well as PhD cand. Aiga Bērziņa–Kite, and PhD Andrejs Gusačenko, researchers in the the Institute of Latvian History at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Latvia.
In his presentation, Ē. Jēkabsons provided an overview of the Latvian War of Independence, while K. Dambītis focused on a review of the military operations carried out by the Latvian Army. Meanwhile, A. Bērziņa–Kite analysed the establishment of Latvia’s prison system during this period, and A. Gusačenko described the shared features of the Latvian War of Independence and the Russian Civil War. Additional information.
